About The Conference

The Symposium of the Journal of Social Welfare invited academics, post-graduate students, and practitioners in the field of Social Welfare and Social Work throughout Indonesia to participate in writing scientific articles. The Symposium of the Journal of Social Welfare will be held on October 2nd 2024 at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia. The main theme for this 2024 edition symposium is “Cooperation and Collaboration in Responding to Social Welfare Problems in ASEAN Countries (2025-2030).”

Various problems related to social welfare in Indonesia need to be analyzed not only from a domestic but also an international perspective. In a world that is increasingly integrated through globalization, interconnectedness of economic activities, acceleration of cross-border mobility, geopolitical influences, and technological interconnectivity, placing Indonesia in the ASEAN context is important. Particularly because ASEAN has become an interconnected region. The current situation and developments show that various ASEAN countries are also facing multidimensional challenges, especially those related to social welfare. Currently, countries in ASEAN face various challenges related to poverty, socio-economic inequality, protection of human rights, fulfillment of social safety nets and provision of adequate public facilities.

However, various initiatives to foster cooperation and collaboration in the ASEAN region have been carried out in an effort to promote social welfare for ASEAN countries. In the economic sector there is the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). In the social and cultural sector there is the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). In the political and security sector there is the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC). Cooperation and collaboration in policy and various other efforts are key in overcoming social welfare problems in Indonesia in particular and ASEAN in general.

Based on the background explained, the Department of Social Welfare organizes the Symposium of the Journal of Social Welfare. The main theme “Cooperation and Collaboration in Responding to Social Welfare Problems in ASEAN Countries (2025- 2030)” departs from critical awareness and strategic objectives. Critical awareness that there are various challenges related to social welfare in ASEAN that need to be responded to through various cooperation initiatives and policy collaboration. The strategic objective is the symposium could be an intellectual forum that productively produces discussions, works, and policy innovations. This symposium invites academics, postgraduate students, and practitioners in the field of Social Welfare and Social Work throughout Indonesia and ASEAN countries to participate and submit research abstracts and full papers that will proceed with the selection process. Articles may describe the situation in one or several ASEAN countries. This activity provides the opportunity for the 20 best articles to be published in the Journal of Social Welfare (JIKS).
